USA Triathlon 2010 Elite National Championship to Air on VERSUS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - For the first time ever, multisport fans can watch the United States’ top triathletes take aim at a national title when VERSUS televises the 2010 USA Triathlon Elite National Championship on Thursday, Oct. 14, from 4-6 p.m. EDT.

The September 25 event in Tuscaloosa, Ala., will be aired via tape-delay on the sports cable network and will feature nearly 70 top men’s and women’s American triathletes. Veteran Olympic and Tour de France broadcaster Craig Hummer will call the action, while 2004 U.S. Olympic triathlete Barb Lindquist will report directly from the course.

“We’re thrilled that VERSUS will televise the 2010 USA Triathlon Elite National Championships for our members, as well multisport fans across the country,” said Chuck Menke, USA Triathlon Director of Marketing & Communications. “This represents the first-ever television broadcast of a USA Triathlon National Championship event to a nationwide audience. We’d also like to thank the United States Olympic Committee for being instrumental in this process.”

A quartet of U.S. Olympians and the top-ranked Americans in the 2010 Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series – Laura Bennett (Boulder, Colo.) and Matt Chrabot (Colorado Springs, Colo.) – will headline a start list that’s a virtual Who’s Who of American Olympic-distance triathletes.

In addition to Bennett, fellow Olympians Sarah Haskins (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Jarrod Shoemaker (Maynard, Mass.) and Matt Reed (Boulder, Colo.) also are scheduled to compete. Greg Bennett (Boulder, Colo.), previously an Olympian for his native Australia, will race under the ITU flag as he transitions his affiliation from Australia to the U.S.

Eleven of the top 13 U.S. men in the ITU WCS series rankings are expected to be in action, as will five of the top six women. The race is an ITU Premium Pan American Cup event and nearly 20 international athletes also will compete.
