7th Annual Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon Announces New Features and Partnerships for 2011

PHLYTRI Returns to the 2011 Life Time Fitness Triathlon Series Race to the Toyota Cup

Registration Now Open for 2011 PHLYTRI – June 24-26

November 29, 2010 (Philadelphia, PA) – One of the top ranked multi-sport events in the country — the Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon (PHLYTRI) has announced new features and partnerships for the 2011 event taking pace June 24-26.

The 7th annual PHLYTRI will host an entire weekend of multisport events including:  the PHLYTRI Olympic distance race (1.5K swim, 40K bike and 10K run) which for the second year will be part of the Life Time Fitness Triathlon Series Race to the Toyota Cup, the PHLYTRI Sprint distance race (.9K swim, 24K bike and 5K run), Kids Fun Runs & Duathlons and a two-day multi-sport expo. Registration for these events is now open at www.PhillyTri.com

New features announced for the 2011 PHLYTRI include:
• Aquabike – PHLYTRI has added an Aquabike wave for both the Sprint and Olympic races. One of the fastest growing segments of multisport, Aquabike is a swim/bike competition created as a way to increase participation in athletes who suffered running related injuries by eliminating the run portion of the event.

• Improved Olympic Distance Run Course – In response to athlete feedback, the PHLYTRI Olympic race run course will be modified to lessen the long, sun-drenched finishing stretch on MLK Drive.

• New Community Partnerships – PHLYTRI has expanded its community partnerships to include the Fairmount Park Conservancy and The Cadence Cycling Foundation.  These two organizations join long-standing charitable partner, The Cancer Center at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, which benefits greatly from the Karr Barth CHOP Charity Challenge at the PHLYTRI Sprint race.

Recognized as one of the “10 Greenest Races” by Triathlete Magazine, PHLYTRI will be working with the Fairmount Park Conservancy and event sponsor Nathan Performance Gear on a Green Race Initiative. The event is expanding its involvement with the Cadence Cycling Foundation to provide the boys and girls in their program enhanced opportunities to participate in the sport of triathlon.

The PHLYTRI continues its affiliation with the Life Time Fitness Triathlon Series Race to the Toyota Cup.   An increased prize purse of $40,000 will ensure another great field of top US and International pros competing.

The event will again host an Elite Amateur wave in both the Olympic and Sprint Races.  Eligibility for the Olympic Elite Amateur wave requires a time under 2:15 for men and 2:30 for women within the past two years. The top three finishers in the Olympic Elite Amateur wave will qualify for the Toyota US Open in October, the championship event of the Life Time Fitness Series.  For the Sprint, it’s a top ten overall finish in a Sprint Race in the past three years.

Registrants need to provide a link to the qualifying results. There is no Elite Amateur wave for the Aquabike.

Founded in 2005, the Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon is one of the largest and most popular triathlons in the country.  Held in the city’s historic Fairmount Park, the race was named a top-five triathlon in the United States by Outside Magazine, was lauded as one of the top big city triathlons by Inside Triathlon Magazine, and named one of the “10 Greenest Races” by Triathlete Magazine. A Message to My Fellow Endurance Sports Junkies

I know we are all planning and plotting what events we will be doing in 2011. But as we do, I want to offer up a friendly reminder.

First of all, don’t forget that you are an extremely fortunate person to even be in the position of choosing what event you will pay good money to compete in. There are many people out there struggling over which necessity to buy or trying to figure out how to put food on the table. Signing up for a race is a true privilege.

There are also so many people who lack the health and well being to even be able to walk up a flight of stairs, let alone choose a triathlon. Count your blessings.

And the really sad part about life and the economy is that you may be an elite athlete today, but find yourself in one of the positions that I just mentioned tomorrow. Stay grounded and don’t lose your perspective.

So what can you do? You can race for reasons. You can choose events whose management recognizes the power of the multisport community and who use their events to help others. Or take it upon yourself and fundraise for the cause of your choice. If you open your eyes you would probably spot a dozen “reasons” the next time you go for a training run.

Don’t race selfishly. Don’t race for bragging rights, unless you want to brag about how many thousands of dollars you raised to help another individual or cause.

Make it count and make a difference.

Connections

I wanted to share the story of an important connection that I made this past week. I received the below email from a woman whose father was just recently diagnosed with the same form of leukemia that I was diagnosed with. Needless to say, I was very touched by her email. So much so, that I made arrangements to meet the woman, as well as her mom, right after the 8K race that was run this weekend as part of the Philadelphia Marathon & Half Marathon. We met briefly after the race and established a great connection which I hope will continue to grow.

Read on …

I am a 22 year old recent Penn graduate and now a nurse at HUP in Philadelphia.  I was reading over the Philly Magazine Be Well Blog and came across your name and story.  I just wanted to tell you that you are an inspiration for me.  My family found out in May that my 49 year old father (who has never been sick in his life) was diagnosed with CLL.  While he does not have any symptoms and is lucky to be Stage 0 at this time, this sudden diagnosis was shocking and devastating to us, especially since it is not common for people so young to be diagnosed with CLL.

My father has always been my hero and the person I aspire to be like, which sounds cliché but is 100% true.  Since my mother and I are both nurses, we knew the seriousness of this diagnosis and my mother especially has been having a really hard time trying to come to terms with my father’s diagnosis.  She has talked to many people who know someone who received the same diagnosis and she tends to focus on the worst-case scenarios.  Reading about your story made me so excited to show her an example of someone who was diagnosed young, just like my father, and who has pushed through and fought this illness into remission.  While we have no idea what is in store for my father and his fight with CLL, it’s always nice to hear of a good outcome.

I don’t want to take up a lot of your time, but I saw you are running in this Saturday’s 8k run.  I took up running myself just before we received my father’s diagnosis and it has helped give me an outlet to escape the worry that is sometimes prevalent in my family and explore what my body is capable of.  My father’s diagnosis encouraged me to sign up for this race and I can’t believe it is finally here.  I just wanted to let you know that I am even more excited to cross the finish line this Saturday knowing you are running in this race as well and I hope you know how much of an inspiration you are to people like me.

If you happen to see a girl with black pants and a red long sleeved Penn shirt on amongst the hundreds of people on Saturday, please say hello.  My mom will be there to cheer me on and I can’t wait to send this e-mail and tell her about your story.  Thank you so much for your story and good luck Saturday!
