It’s Coming….. I Swear.

OK, here is the deal. My new book that I am putting together should have been ready and published by now. The only thing standing in the way now – is me.

It’s a shame because Ethan Zohn has written a great foreword to the book. Shep Messing has also provided his own message that I included. Scott Tinley and two-time Olympian Vicki Huber-Rudawsky have provided some great feedback that appears on the back cover. The art work is done …. But I just can’t get past the last round of editing because right now at this moment in time, I don’t like what I have written. I am stuck and I am being my own worst critic.

The title is “Finding the Center… ramblings on life and sport” The story behind the title is one thing that I do like, but you will have to wait for that story…

I’m sure this will pass, hopefully soon. My goal is to finalize everything by this weekend. Once finalized, advance copies will be available directly from the publisher prior to retail release. So, bear with me. I’m close.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit Grassroot Soccer.

Young Adult Cancer Survivor Keeps Giving Back

Reposted from The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s newsletter…

Today, I’m sharing a story about Kelly Madigan, a young adult cancer survivor who not only lost a parent to Hodgkin lymphoma, but was diagnosed with the same disease when she was a teenager.

“Cancer.” It’s hard to remember how I reacted to that word before it became part of my everyday vocabulary and everyday life.

My dad died of Hodgkin lymphoma when I was just 15-months-old, and this was pretty much all I knew about the disease. About two months before my seventeenth birthday, I had an enlarged lymph node removed from my neck, and before I knew it, Hodgkin lymphoma became my world. Instead of finishing up my junior year of high school and studying for my finals, I was having a port put in, undergoing chemotherapy, then radiation treatment. Despite all of this, or because of it, I learned how to truly appreciate life.

My best friend Liz summed it up well when she wrote the quote we now live by: “Live strong, dream big, and never stop smiling.” My family and friends surrounding me provided constant positive attitudes and made it easy to keep going through each day. Without the laughs and smiles, I honestly don’t know what I would have done.

We celebrated my five-year remission anniversary last year, and as a survivor I have decided to give back. I’m currently finishing my last year of a Masters in nursing program through Vanderbilt University School of Nursing to get my MSN in pediatric acute care. It’s my plan to then work in pediatric oncology and help kids as they deal with cancer.

I am also giving back to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) in as many ways as I can. I have done Light The Night Walk (LTN) on multiple occasions in New York and Tennessee. Even now, I am looking forward to my next walk! Last year I also participated in a young adult cancer survivor meet and greet dinner on Long Island, which I enjoyed so much.

As I think back to when I was a patient I remember thinking, “Why me and what do I do now?” But I also remember that I tried to keep this clichéd, yet true, statement in my mind: “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.” If you are faced with cancer know that you can, and will be a better person after cancer. And always remember: live strong, dream big, and never stop smiling.

Your support makes a difference. For more information about LLS’s vital work, visit www.LLS.org .

2011 Nautica NYC Triathlon Lottery

Due to popular demand, registration for the Nautica New York City Triathlon will now be through a random lottery, rather than on a first come first served basis. You asked; we listened! Here’s how it works:

The lottery will be open for 72 hours, opening November 1st at 12:01 AM EST and closing November 3rd at 11:59 PM EST. The Lottery registration link will appear on this page, at www.nyctri.com, and will be emailed to all athletes on our mailing list.

You may enter the lottery either online or by mail. There is a non-refundable online pricing fee of $11.00 per athlete.

Applicants may register for the lottery as an Individual or as a Group. Group registration is for families, friends or other small groups (between 2-5 members) that only want to race if they can do so together. Group entries will essentially enter the lottery as an individual, but if that individual is selected, everyone in the group will also be selected. *Note: for relays, only one athlete needs to register for the lottery and should do so as an Individual. Relay entrants do not enter as a group.

The lottery includes a non-refundable online processing fee of $11 per athlete. Each relay team pays one $11 processing fee. A group pays $11 for each person in the group. For example, a group of four people pays a $44 lottery processing fee. Only one application per person. Any fees processed due to individuals submitting duplicate applications are non-refundable.

After the lottery closes, there will be an electronic random drawing of all applications. The Nautica New York City Triathlon has contracted a 3rd party to supervise and certify the 2011 Nautica New York City Triathlon lottery selection process.

All applicants will be notified via e-mail no later than 10:00 pm EST November 4 as to their registration status as follows:

If Selected: Selected applicants will receive an acceptance email from Active.com. To complete registration, selected applicants must click the registration link in the acceptance email, fill out the registration form, and pay the $245 entry fee by November 11, 2010. The lottery processing fee is not applied towards the race entry fee.  Each member of selected Group entries must return to complete their registrations. Athletes who do not complete their registration by November 11th will forfeit their spots. All registrations are non-refundable and non-transferable; Details can be found at www.nyctri.com

If Not Selected: Applicants that are not selected in the Random Draw will also receive an email from Active.com. This email will detail other registration options, including Champions Club and Charity Program entry spots.
