XTERRA Wetsuit For Sale

I have a used XTERRA Vector 2 full wetsuit for sale. It’s a few seasons old, but worn only a handful of times and in GREAT condition. It is a men’s large and the sizing was a little snug for me and I never did anything about it. I am 6′3″ and about 200 lbs. Should have gone with the XL and have since replaced it with a newer XL XTERRA and love it.

The first $75 takes it. Original retail was over $400. New XTERRA Vectors are over $500.

On the Near Horizon

I wanted to let folks know that I have been brewing another book project over the last several months. This is simply another compilation of short stories, articles, and blog posts on various subjects relating to life, cancer, triathlon, people, and anything else that may have moved me. As well as a few pieces on some friends who were lost. I realize that’s quite a broad spectrum of subject matter, but those who  know me will not be surprised by that.

I am excited about this project for a few reasons. Some of the pieces in this book have really hit home with not only me, but for others as well. My good buddy Ethan Zohn has written the foreword for me, and a portion of these proceeds will go to Ethan’s charity Grassroot Soccer. Here is a little teaser from Ethan:

“There is a general consensus in the sport of soccer that all goalkeepers are crazy – a different breed of human being. Steve was a goalkeeper. And I think the reason he is having me write this forward is because we have so much in common. Steve is an elite athlete and I’m a former soccer star. Steve has beaten cancer and I’m a recent Survivor. Steve has competed in many ironman triathlons and I have watched many ironman triathlons”

I have also received some nice initial feedback from people whom I hold in the highest regard, such as Scott Tinley:

“Stephen Brown writes with equal parts thoughtful muse and devil-may-care prose. Perhaps born of his own life challenges, he doesn’t swoon his readers as much as he shakes their own foundations of belief about what sport is and what it isn’t. In a world of slick, market-driven writers and bloggers, Brown writes for the best of all reasons—because it helps him to understand a confusing time and place. ”

Scott Tinley, author of “Racing the Sunset: An Athlete’s Quest for Life after Sport”

The working title of the book is “In Search of Center… ramblings on life and sport”. The title itself actually stemmed from an email that Tinley sent to me where he raised the question, “How can I find my center if I don’t visit the edge”? I couldn’t shake those words and had to do something with them.

Stay tuned and look for its release in the coming weeks. Don’t forget my previously released titles, which can be found HERE.

Look! Up in the Sky!

Well I awoke to a fun surprise yesterday morning when my daughter text messaged me with the following: “dude, you are on a BILLBOARD”?!?!?! Well, I knew that The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society was in the process of partnering with Clear Channel Entertainment to place a number of billboards around the Philadelphia area honoring the Man & Woman of the Year, I just didn’t know when or where they would appear.

This one just happens to be just a few short blocks from my house. I am still unsure of the location of the others. It’s pretty strange seeing yourself up there like that! But it is also an opportunity for me to thank everyone for all of their help and support with this campaign and to remind people that our work is not yet done.

Saucony Run For Good Foundation Honors National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

From East to West, Saucony Continues to Run Childhood Obesity Off the Map

LEXINGTON, MA — September 16, 2010 — The Saucony Run For Goodsm Foundation, established to help combat childhood obesity by providing financial support to community-based youth running programs, has announced its support for the first ever National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. In recognition of this event the Foundation renewed its commitment to help improve the health of our nation’s children with the announcement of a new round of grant winners. This announcement comes on the heels of the Presidential Proclamation declaring September “National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.”

The eight Saucony Run For Good Foundation grant recipients include organizations from Massachusetts to California, including Tennessee, a state with one of the highest childhood obesity rates in the country. Since the Foundation’s 2006 launch, nearly 70 organizations nationwide have been recipients of Saucony Run For Good grants totaling over $600,000 – all dedicated to promoting the sport of running as a part of a healthy, active lifestyle.

“Obesity and other health concerns have grown to pandemic levels in children, with lack of physical activity, poor dietary habits, and lack of funding for school-based physical education programs contributing to the issue,” said Richie Woodworth, president of the Saucony Run For Good Board of Directors and of Saucony, Inc., a subsidiary of Collective Brands, Inc. (PSS) and a leading global supplier of performance athletic footwear and apparel.  “We applaud Congress for bringing national awareness to this rapidly growing epidemic and encourage communities to build local programs that will arm our children with the knowledge and tools they need to get running and to live and maintain healthier lives.”

In a recent press release announcing the proclamation, President Obama stated: “There are concrete steps we can take right away as concerned parents, caregivers, educators, loved ones, and a Nation to ensure that our children are able to live full and active lives. During National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, I urge all Americans to take action to meet our national goal of solving the problem of childhood obesity within a generation.”

According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the prevalence of obesity among children aged 6 to 11 has more than doubled in the past 20 years and nearly 25 million children are overweight or on the brink of becoming overweight.

“Childhood obesity is growing at an alarming rate,” said Susan K. Hartman, associate publisher of Runner’s World magazine and a member of the Saucony Run For Good Board of Directors. “With funding for physical education programs on the decline, Saucony launched the Run For Good Foundation to help create greater access and opportunities for kids to live healthier lives through community-based running programs.”

”On behalf of the Run For Good Foundation’s board, I am excited to announce the organizations that have been selected to receive a Run For Good grant and feel proud that these efforts will directly help combat childhood obesity,” said Woodworth.

The recipients of these grants range from start-up programs looking to institute community running clubs, to well-attended existing programs that require additional funds to continue to foster growth in their organization. The primary goal for all is to promote running as a critical part of healthy lifestyles among children.

Thank You from Ethan and Steve

Soccer Clinic with Ethan team cropJust a quick follow up note to all of you who registered for yesterday’s clinic. I hope the participants and parents had as much fun as Ethan and I did. I thought things went very well and I couldn’t have asked for a better afternoon.

The donation that was made in registering each participant for this clinic was generously matched by the Haverford Soccer Club. Combined, we were able to make a very substantial donation of close to $3,000 to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to aid in the fight against blood cancers. Thank you for that.

The venue in Manayunk, as well as all balls, pinnies, cones, etc. were also very generously donation by YSC Sports. Successful charity events don’t just happen without dedicated and caring people pitching in and doing their share to help.

In Memory of Jim MacLaren

Jim MacLaren, who at one time was the world’s fastest amputee triathlete, passed away Monday evening August 30th. His life was short but amazingly impactful. After getting hit by a New York City bus while on his motorcycle back in 1985 and having his lower leg amputated below the knee ,  the former Yale football player reinvented himself and became the Babe Ruth of amputee athletes, running a 3:16 marathon and going 10:42 at the Ironman in Kona, Hawaii.

In June of 1993, while competing in a triathlon in Orange County, California, MacLaren was on his bike when a van went through a closed intersection, hit the back of the bike and propelled him into a pole. When he arrived at the hospital he was told that he was a quadriplegic and would never move again from the waist down.

Bob Babbitt, Jeffrey Essakow and Rick Kozlowski, three of his many friends from the sport of triathlon, created a triathlon in San Diego after the accident to buy Jim a vehicle that he could drive with his hands. The goal was to raise $25,000 and they ended up raising $48,000 through the first ever San Diego Triathlon Challenge. “At that event,” remembers Babbitt, “a number of other amputee athletes came up to us to thank us for what we did for Jim, but to also let us know that there were so many other athletes out there that needed help. Insurance would cover a walking  leg, but anything having to do with sport was considered a luxury item.”

From Jim’s second tragedy, the Challenged Athletes Foundation was born and in the 17 years since, CAF has raised over $28,000,000 to help disabled athletes stay in the game of life by providing grants to help purchase the equipment they need to stay in the game of life through sport.

“CAF is Jimmy’s legacy,” continues Babbitt.  “I’m proud to say that, through the athletes that we help every day, his impact will live on forever.”

Ethan Zohn & Steve Brown to Host Charity Soccer Clinic

Ethan Zohn and Steve Brown, in partnership with The Haverford Soccer Club, are hosting a soccer training session for Middle and High School aged boys and girls.  The session will be held at YSC Sports on Main Street in Manayunk Pennsylvania on Sunday September 5th at 1pm. All clinic proceeds will benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Ethan Zohn & Steve Brown

Ethan Zohn & Steve Brown

Ethan Zohn was a professional soccer player and  the winner of the reality TV show SURVIVOR Africa. In 2002 Ethan co-founded Grassroot Soccer through which he trains professional soccer players to teach African children through a tailor-made curriculum about HIV/AIDS prevention.  More recently, Zohn has also been very public in his own personal battle against cancer; a battle he is well on his way to winning.

Steve Brown grew up in Havertown Pennsylvania. He is a former soccer player and is himself a leukemia survivor who spends countless hours raising funds and awareness for blood cancer research as well as a number of other causes.  Brown and Zohn will also reunite in New York in November to run in the ING NYC Marathon while raising funds for Zohn’s charity, Grassroot Soccer. Brown is a marathon and ironman triathlon veteran as well as a triathlon coach, speaker, and writer.

A mutual friend connected Brown and Zohn upon Zohn’s cancer diagnosis and these two cancer warriors continue to use their energy and resources to help make a difference wherever they can.

Only a few clinic spots remain. For additional information lease contact Steve Brown at stephensbrown@verizon.net or 267.496.7866
