Delaware County Community College Alumni Award Nomination

I am honored to have been nominated for The Wong Moss Outstanding Alumni Award by the alumni office of Delaware County Community College. This award recognizes distinguished alumni for their outstanding professional, community and educational accomplishments. It was created by the late Barbara Wong Moss, a former College trustee, and her son John in honor of her father, a Chinese immigrant who believed in the value of education. I will keep you posted on the status and outcome of my nomination in the coming weeks.

Retire with Dignity and Grace

I hate to see them go from active, competitive, and being on top of the world one day to cast off to the side and just forgotten overnight. It’s sad. I prefer to see them treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve. Allow them to step down gradually and pass through a phasing out process that doesn’t leave them feeling unneeded, unwanted, and unloved.  Just because their high performance days are over doesn’t mean that can’t still add value or contribute.

I like to see them treated as follows …. After they are over the prime of their athletic career (perhaps having raced an ironman or a marathon), don’t give up on them. Depending on their overall state and how well they have been treated and been cared for, they may still be good companions for that small low key neighborhood 5k or can certainly still enjoy some low intensity training miles.

The next step in the process would be a migration to the gym. With their serious racing and training behind them, they can still give and get a lot of benefit with regular trips to the gym and some indoor cycling or strength training. I see this all the time. They hang out and congregate around the local YMCA and while they may not actually say anything, they walk around with a certain sense of … something that says “I was good. I logged some serious mileage, crossed finished lines and celebrated. I was somebody, or something”.

But of course the time will come when our friends become too worn and weathered for even the gym. A mere shell of their former self. At that point they may be limited to a different kind of fitness such as gardening, lawn cutting, or even just casual walks about town.

Eventually, however, the end is inevitable. Having passed through the various cycles of fitness, they will have to stop all activity completely. But that need not necessarily be a sad day. Embrace who they were, what they did, and the accomplishments they helped you achieve. Although retired, they are champions and should be treated as such.

ShoesSo, once those old tired running shoes are removed for the very last time, find a local organization to donate them to. There are many of them out there and they will draw every last breath and step out of your old cast offs and ultimately retire them to the recycle farm where they can further contribute to breeding new life again in some capacity.

Take care of that which has taken care of you and take care of those who of have taken care of you.

Train safe, race smart, and thank the volunteers.

Sleep Tight

I am what you might call an “active sleeper”. I often move, twitch, and jerk in my sleep. It doesn’t disrupt my sleep in anyway, in fact I was a little surprised at just how active I can be at night. It also seems to by much worse after a long training day or a longer race. It almost seems like I am still attempting to swim, bike, and run, while I sleep.

sleep1So, because I wanted to rule out any serious neurological problems or conditions that might be causing my nocturnal over activity, I agreed to do an overnight sleep study a couple of weeks ago. As the photos will indicate, every possible bodily function and movement was wired for overnight monitoring. My wires were even wired. My brainwaves, respiratory, Pulse O2, heart rate, muscle movements were all closely monitored throughout a one night study at the Taylor Hospital Sleep Lap in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania. And of course while I slept, “they watched” via a closed circuit camera.

I felt like I had an extra 50 pounds of weights and restraints glued, buckled, or attached to me. Probably because – I had an extra 50 pounds of weights and restraints glued, buckled, or attached to me. The technician finished connecting me and plugging me in at about 11 PM at which point he hit the lights and wished me a good night’s sleep. That seemed like an improbable task because I felt that I awoke with every movement in bed. Something tugged or pulled no matter how I positioned myself.

Although it didn’t seem like I slept very soundly, the test results proved differently. At 6 AM, Gary my sleep tech woke me up and said that they had recorded good data and therefore the study was considered “ successful”. The next step was a follow up appointment with the initial sleep doctor that I saw to review the findings. I am happy to report that my sleep pattern, “architecture”, and all bio feedback and vital signs were perfect. In short, there is no medical reason for my activity. What this means is that they officially diagnosed me with Periodic Limb Movement Disorder.

sleep2Translation? “I am what you might call an “active sleeper”. I often move, I twitch, and I jerk in my sleep. It doesn’t disrupt my sleep in anyway in fact I was a little surprised at just how active I can be at night. It also seems to by much worse after a long training day or a longer race. It almost seems like I am still attempting to swim, bike, and run, while I sleep”

Treatment? A new mattress capable of hosting Olympic games on one half while providing a calm and restful environment on the other half. And/or a healthy dose of vitamin “M” (Merlot) before retiring. I’ll keep you posted on this one!

Sweet dreams

Interview with Todd Crandell: From Addict to Ironman

Don’t forget to listen in to my show this Sunday January 16th at 3:30 PM EST when I will interview Todd Crandell on “Make it Count”.

Todd’s own 13-year struggle with drugs and alcohol nearly destroyed his life, devastating relationships with family and friends and shattering the promise of a professional hockey career. He quit using drugs and alcohol on April 15, 1993, and has been sober ever since.

In the process of rebuilding his life, Todd realized traditional recovery programs weren’t enough. He needed something more. He chose the most grueling sport imaginable, the Ironman Triathlon – 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run.

Todd ran his first triathlon in 1999 and has never stopped. He has completed eighteen full-length Ironmans all over the world and in 2008 he was the only person in the world to complete the Ultraman Hawaii which is a 3 days test of endurance that includes 6.2 miles of swimming & 90 miles of biking (day 1) 171.2 mile of biking (day 2) and 52.4 mile of running (day 3) and 6 days later complete Ironman Western Australia.

In 2009 Todd completed Ultraman Canada and became 1 of 25 individuals in the world who have completed both Ultraman Triathlons. His experience running these events and inspiring others on their road to sobriety led him to form Racing for Recovery® in 2001.
