Finding Your Way

It’s so easy to just fumble along and go with the flow without really understanding where you are headed or why. It’s almost like we travel through our lives as if in a maze, always looking for “the way” through it. And as long as we find a path, we take it without really trying to figure out if there is another path or another way that might be better than the one we have chosen.

But I guess as long as you get to the end of the maze, unscathed and without any harm done to yourself or others, then everything is OK. As long as we learn and try to improve along the way.

And then sometimes you DO realize that there is a better path or a better way but you just can’t get to it. The path is blocked somehow either through a very real closure, or one manifested in your own head. Then what do you do?

Then you are faced with the dilemma of how to compensate the best way you can while you continue to work through the better way and the blocked path. You have to figure out how badly you really want or need to find a way around the blocked path. Do you give up on it? Do you fight through it? I think the worst solution is to just sell out and take an easier path but one that is clearly not the best path. I think that leaves most people feeling hollow and unfulfilled.

And then of course there is the climate and the environment in which we live. That too has an impact on how we view our chosen path. What feels right or wrong today can change in the blink of an eye as life happens all around us. These events can lead us into a passive redirection of sorts or allow us to be ok with where we are.

I guess through it all you just need to have a general idea where the heck you want to end up. And if you don’t, it’s OK. But just ask that as you find that direction you make sound and sensible judgments and decisions. And if you don’t, find the lessons learned in those mistakes and do not repeat them.

Life is Pretty Easy Afterall

I don’t know what all of the confusion is about. I think I have this game figured out. Everyone should get along quite nicely if we all strive to do the following before we are done here:

1). Set an example

2). Make a memory

3). Create a legacy

OK maybe number 3 is a bit challenging but it’s a good goal to work towards.

The Legacy of Lake Lenape

July 10th 2010 marked the 20th anniversary of the Lake Lenape sprint distance triathlon. This little jewel of a triathlon is nestled away in the quiet and scenic neighborhood of Mays Landing New Jersey and truly has become a community staple.

For 20 years Lake Lenape has offered something for everyone. First time triathletes, seasoned veterans, enthusiastic supporters, and the local residents all take part in the spirit and the excitement of what has evolved into a fantastic event for all.

The ¼- mile swim takes place at The Cove at Lake Lenape. This is a mild temperature and friendly lake featuring an inviting beach start. Deemed a very first timer friendly event, this is the perfect body of water to launch even the most hesitant participant into the very welcoming triathlon community.

The 10 plus mile bike ride is an out and back course with just enough gentle rollers and soft wrinkles in the road to keep your muscles loose and ready to tear up the run.

After the swim and bike, athletes take off through the surrounding neighborhood to run a fast and flat 5k as they wind past the cheers and support of many of the local residents perched curbside to take in the excitement.

The beauty of this race is that it really does welcome athletes of all sizes, shapes, and levels of experience. Race Director Sean Clancy does an excellent job of engaging all of his participants, their supporters, and the community as a whole; offering many special award categories such as top local police officer finishers as well as awards for first time triathletes.

On a personal note, this race is particularly special for me. In 2006 it was the first race that I did after my leukemia diagnosis once I reached remission and was given the green light to resume racing.

2010 Lake Lenape Tri 002This year, a few of us also honored Derek Valentino by adding his initials while being body marked. Derek was the athlete who lost his life pursuing his dream at another triathlon a few weeks ago.

This is a hometown event that is professionally backed and supported. This is a “must do” race.

A Fallen Brother

The sport of triathlon always gets my writing juices flowing. For different reasons, so does the topic of death and losing a loved one. So I can’t quite understand why when those two subjects combine as one that I am practically at a loss for words. Perhaps it’s not that I am at a loss for words, maybe I just can’t seem to organize any of the words that are colliding in my head into an intelligent thought.

Derek Valentino

Derek Valentino

As many of you know an athlete lost his life at this past weekend’s Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon. Although as athletes we all know the inherent risks of participating in these types of events, hearing news like this always gut wrenching.  And it’s even more difficult when it happens at a race that you are involved with on the production side, and when you are friends with the race’s organizers and founders. I know how hard they are taking this. I know how diligent they are in the planning, execution, and safety concerns associated with putting on an event such as this. They take each and every detail very seriously…. as they should. But still…. things happen.

But all of that pales in comparison to what Derek Valentino’s family went through on race day and the pain and loss they now feel. Derek was a 40 year old father of two and a first time triathlete. I didn’t know Derek, but at the same time, I did. His is a pretty common demographic in the triathlon community… Derek could have been anyone.

But he wasn’t just anyone. He was a dad, and a husband, whose family supported his quest to become a triathlete. While my heart aches for Derek’s family, there is a small voice inside me that is telling me that Derek died pursuing a passion, which in some weird way makes it a little better, yet more tragic at the same time.

I will say this to the Valentino family… Derek wanted to be a triathlete. The truth is he already was a triathlete by race morning. The training and preparation that Derek put into this race made him the triathlete that he wanted to become. The Valentino family probably doesn’t quite understand just how tight the triathlon community is, but I have a feeling they are about to find out.

We all mourn your loss. And we are all honored that Derek chose to become involved with this sport.

Congrats Philly Tri Participants, Volunteers, and Staff

It was a rough weekend at this year’s Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon. Congratulations to all athletes, regardless of the outcome of your day. You were faced with your share of challenges this weekend. Great job just enduring and adapting. Some of you may not have had the perfect race, but none of you raced in perfect conditions so pat yourselves on the back.

Additionally, I want to salute all those involved on the production side with all three events. There were a number of challenges to be handled and a couple of game day decisions that needed to be made and executed. Kudos to all staff, management, volunteers, and Philadelphia city employees and officials for making it all happen.

Ironman Texas Added to Ironman Series

June 24, 2010 (Tampa, Fla.) – Today, World Triathlon Corporation announces the addition of Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas to its worldwide Ironman Series. Taking place in The Woodlands, located just north of downtown Houston, the event is scheduled for May 21, 2011. The inaugural race will enhance the current Ironman calendar, which consists of 25 events around the world in locations such as Australia, China, Brazil and Germany.

“Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas will be a phenomenal race,” said Steve Meckfessel, Ironman’s Chief Operations Officer. “The community’s spirit, unique amenities and accessibility make The Woodlands a perfect destination for our athletes and spectators. We’re truly excited about adding this event to the 2011 Ironman schedule.”

Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas will offer 65 coveted slots to the 2011 Ford Ironman World Championship, taking place on Oct. 8 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Additionally, there will be a prize purse of $100,000 for distribution among the top professional male and female finishers.

“We are very pleased that World Triathlon Corporation has selected The Woodlands for its Ironman Texas event,” said Bruce Tough, Chairman of the Board of The Woodlands Township. “This world-class event garners major international exposure and is great for the recognition of The Woodlands.”

Participants will begin with a swim in Lake Woodlands, entering the water at Northshore Park and finishing at Town Green Park, which will serve as the transition area. Athletes will then head out on the bike course that will take them west through The Woodlands before heading north to the scenic, rolling farmland of east Texas. The final portion of the race is a marathon course entirely within The Woodlands that concludes with a spectacular finish on Market Street.

Nick Wolda, President of The Woodlands Convention & Visitors Bureau added, “The Woodlands and South Montgomery County are quickly becoming household names in competitive sports events, from the world-class brand of Ironman to NCAA, college and high school championships. With people from all over the world living and visiting The Woodlands, Ironman Texas is a perfect match for our international community.”

“This event will showcase the huge variety of shopping, dining, entertainment and hospitality we have in The Woodlands, and will be very beneficial for the residents and businesses of The Woodlands,” said Nelda Luce Blair, Chairman of the Board, The Woodlands Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, the largest not-for-profit healthcare provider serving greater Houston, will serve as title sponsor of the event.

A longtime resident of The Woodlands, Steve Sanders, CEO of Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital, welcomed the announcement for multiple reasons.

“My pride that The Woodlands was selected for this race is matched only by my pride in Memorial Hermann’s outstanding sports medicine program. This is a win-win for our community and for Memorial Hermann.”

As a major player in the athletic arena, the Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine Institute was actively looking to diversify its programs and outreach through a meaningful partnership. Therefore, aligning with the World Triathlon Corporation was ideal in that both organizations’ core values revolve around improving the health of the communities they serve and working with athletes to achieve their highest potential.

“With one of the country’s top institutes dedicated to sports medicine and human performance in the Texas Medical Center, more than two dozen sports medicine and rehabilitation locations across our service area, and an outstanding team of physicians associated with our sports medicine programs, Memorial Hermann is the leader in sports related medical services,” said Walt Lowe, M.D., medical director, Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine Institute and Chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. “We share Ironman’s interest in helping athletes achieve their highest potential and look forward to working with them to do just that.”

Registration for the event opens tomorrow, June 25, at noon CDT at www.ironmantexas.com. Additional course details will be finalized in the coming weeks and will be available on the Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas Web site. For athlete inquiries, please contact texas@ironman.com.

Moving Ahead in 2010 – Grassroot Soccer & NYC 26.2

As I shift gears away from my Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Man of the Year campaign, it’s time to start promoting another high profile fundraising initiative that I have taken on in 2010.

GRS_Marathon_For_Feature2On November 7th 2010, I will be teaming up with my buddy Ethan Zohn again to race the New York City with Ethan’s charity Grassroot Soccer. Grassroot Soccer uses the power of soccer and many influential leaders as a vehicle to educate and raise funds and awareness for the children of Africa in an effort to fight back against HIV/AIDS. You can help us with this initiative by making your tax deductible donation HERE.

As always, thank you for your continued support. Please do what you can. $5 and $10 donations can really add up to be very powerful and can facilitate positive change.
