LLS Man of the Year Candidate

Dear friends,

I just wanted to drop a quick note to let you all know that I just accepted a nomination to run for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Man of the Year. (Follow that link for more details on the campaign.) I was reluctant at first to take on another initiative but once I spent a minute to really think about the honor and what it stands for, it was a slam-dunk decision. What this really means is that I will embark on a fundraising campaign in early April that will run through the end of June and will try to raise as much money as possible to aid in the battle against blood cancers.

You all know that I have a very personal connection to this cause, so accepting the nomination was in the stars.  Although I know this is a worthy cause, and I am looking forward to doing my best to make a valuable contribution, I won’t be able to do it without the help of good people. In the coming months I will be reaching out to people with the hope that folks will be able to spread the word and assist in any way possible.

More info will follow but for now just keep it in the back of your mind and start thinking of some possible ways we can partner. I will also brainstorm some creative ways to attack this bear!!

Thanks for everyone’s continued support and for this humbling honor…..stay tuned!

It’s Just a (Bigger) Number

A father sneers at 50

sunset ponderLast week I was running at a local high school track and was doing some striders along the yard markers of the nice new artificial turf field. While I was running I was mentally ticking off the yard markers in my head thinking how much longer 10 yards looks on TV watching football than on a mild winter day in the middle of a quiet and empty field. I started out doing “high knee” or “strider” drills that began at the goal line and went out to the 20 yard line and then jogged back. Then I went out to the 25 and back, etc. I increased these drills in 5 yard increments with each repeat. As I approached the 50 yard mark in bold white letters on the field, a very strange sensation came over me and I suddenly felt that I was no longer measuring distance. Instead, each passing harsh mark represented another year gone by. And since 50 is my next milestone birthday, and only a few months away, I was a little apprehensive about hitting that 50 yard marker during my drill. As my repeats got closer to the 50 I just glared at the mark on the field as I turned back to begin again thinking … “it’s coming … soon”.

You have to understand something about me and age… I have the soul of a 300 year old, but usually feel like I am somewhere in between 6 and 16. Yes, I have been married for 23 years. Yes, I have 20 and 21 year old daughters and yes I have a 5 month old granddaughter. Yes, I like to play really hard but I like to rest and chill really hard too and take power naps. Not the kind of naps your grandparents used to take. The kind of naps you used to take as a little kid. So, like I said …..I am still somewhere between 6 and 16 years of age with a 300 year old soul that knows how to rationalize why naps are important. The only reason I know that I’m going to be turning 50 is because others remind me of that fact and I can do the math on my driver’s license. Actually, I lied … the real reason that I am aware of my age is because I am required to disclose that info when I register for races. So you tend to become very aware of your age and your opportunity to “age up” into the next age group bracket and compete against kids much older…. Like 51 or 52. You know, the big kids.

The funny thing about the concept of age and the multisport athlete is that it really is just a number. We are all kids. We may feel like 150 year old kids the day after a tough event. But we bounce back like kids too. And the more I think about it, the more I realize that this mindset is not necessarily exclusive to the band of triathletes that I surround myself with. I think our society as a whole has become much more aware of health and fitness than previous generations have been. When I was a kid, being in your 40’s was a half step away from being on social security. Hell, I think I have done more during the decade of my 40’s than most people did in their entire lifetime a generation ago.

I have many finisher photos of me crossing the finish lines of races with my kids. I always said that it will be fun to some day be able to do that with grandchildren as well. And now that time has come and we will have some pictures in 2010 which will include three generations.  OK. so take that to the next logical step. Let’s just say that my granddaughter has a child in her early 20’s. That will put me at about ….. a little older than I am now, and still racing. Therefore, the very real possibility exists for me to be able to cross a finish line someday with my kids, and their kids, and their kids. Perhaps I am reaching, but that’s how I tick. And if the possibility exists, their only needs to be a bridge to connect possibility with reality. And you are either a bridge builder or you are a stick of dynamite. Don’t tell me something can’t be done. You will only give me reasons to prove you wrong.

daddio7So getting back to those yard markers on the football field that we first started talking about. I stood at the goal line to begin my approach up to that 50 yard line. I started out with slow and deliberate high knee strides to get the real benefit of the drill. This would be it I thought. I needed to hit the 50 to send the right message to the age spirits. I needed to hit the 50, stomp on it, spit on it, flip it the bird, and return back to the start line, proud and triumphant. (yes, I play head games and have discussions with myself all the time while working out). But no. The 6 year old in me had a different idea. It was a little more difficult, but a hell of a lot more fun and even a little defiant. (Although that 6 year old didn’t really get permission for this new plan. He just sort of took off with it as he chuckled to himself.) I hit the 45 yard marker, then eyed the 50 with an intensity that said “I own you”. I picked up a little speed and hit that 50…. Then kept right on going …. 45, 40, 35 …. All the way down to the goal line at the  opposite end of the field. When I hit the goal line, I bent down and slapped the line in true high school suicide drill form, turned an about face and sprinted back to my start point. THIS time, when I crossed that 50, I stomped, I spit, I flipped, and I smiled.

It’s just a number.

Rambling On

Christmas Round Up

Well here we are in that dead week in between Christmas and New Years. The no fly zone. Not a whole lot happens this week but it’s a nice transition period between all of the Christmas excitement and the energy that the breaking new year brings with it. I usually remain in the Holiday spirit until a few days into January and then I am ready to put everything away and fast forward the calendar to April.  All joking aside, Christmas was really nice. We got to share it with everyone on both sides of the family and it reminded me that I am surrounded by really great people… and I’m grateful for that.

560030278_20I’m pretty low maintenance and don’t require very much to be able to declare it a great Christmas. I did get a couple of very meaningful gifts that I know were chosen for me and only me. My kids are dialed into what makes me tick and can hit that mark every time without fail. More importantly for me, I was able to share Christmas with those that matter the most. And I was able to see Brynn, listen to her laugh, and hold her until she fell asleep on me. I do get somewhat turned off by those people who become consumed by too much materiality… not only at Christmas, but year round. I overheard recent comments by someone who told of all of the wonderful electronic toys that they were able to purchase for their kids for Christmas – and then thanked God for all of it. No. Sorry. That is as far removed from the meaning of Christmas as one could possibly get. That’s not my God and not my Christmas. In reality, I suppose I am not as annoyed as I am saddened by that person’s values and opinion on what matters in life. But … not my issue so I’ll toss that one right out the window.

Total Recall

My wife and I did a 3 mile walk loop the other day. The driving rain had finally melted the two feet of snow and it felt like a spring day. Along the way, we stopped at the track of a local high school and I did a little track workout and some body weight strength training. While there, two college aged guys showed up with a handful of soccer balls and were just hacking around and shooting on goal. (This is also a very nice new artificial turf field). Many of you know that I spent many years in goal in my previous life and I was as passionate about that game and the art of goalkeeping as I am about multisport racing today. As I worked out, I kept checking them out and felt like I was being drawn into the net and toyed with the idea of jumping in and letting them rip a few on me. I caught up with my wife who had been circling the track and she motioned over towards the goal and said, “you should jump in there”. And that’s all it took….. I ran over and jumped in and told the dudes to be kind as it had been a while. I was good and loose from working out although I could have used a little more of a hand – eye coordination warm up. BUT I was amazed at how it all came back. They took it easy at first but after I hit the ground a couple of times and robbed them of some upper corners, they started cracking some rockets from a15-18 yards away. Yeah, I stared motionless and flatfooted at a few low balls as they flew into the corners but generally speaking, I did well and had a blast. It was a rush and so much fun. That feeling just never leaves you. I felt completely at home….after many years of being away. And it felt good to still be able to stone a couple of kids half my age.

2010 Campaign for Change

I am probably taking on a couple of lofty initiatives again in 2010. My race calendar is filling up but I also have a couple of significant charitable efforts lurking in the wings. I am already registered for the  Livestrong Challenge century ride in late August. I have never done a Livestrong event but obviously, the organization is important to me so I want to support it, and get in a good 100 training ride in the process.

2009 ING NYC Marathon GRS 003I have been talking to Chris Carr, the founder of Wheels for Wells, and may participate in the last stage of their cross country tour which will take us from West Virginia to Ocean City New Jersey. It would be a week long vacation in early August to raise funds and awareness to aid the water crises in Africa. And I am once again going to race the NYC Marathon in November with my buddy Ethan Zohn and his charity Grassroot Soccer. The rest of the year will be filled with racing, training, coaching TEAM IN TRAINING, and enjoying family time at the shore. A more comprehensive schedule can be found here www.remissionman.com/schedule

I am also race directing the Brad Schoener Memorial 5k to be held in conjunction with an all day music marathon on June 12th. Many of you have read my posts on Brad and I encourage you to visit or revisit them as time permits. And come on out on June 12th. This is going to be one heck of a great day. Online registration will be available in a couple of weeks.

I guess that will about to it for today. Keep the positive vibes coming for Ethan who is undergoing a stem cell transplant in this next phase of lymphoma treatment. So far things are going well. Except for his message of “Merry Christmas HEAVE” that was sent on 12/24/09.

Happy New Year

“What sets us apart is our exclusive SheROX Mentor Program,” added McKeever. “Since the Series was launched in 2007, we recognized there was a need for a program to help introduce and educate women on what it takes to participate in the great sport of triathlon.  This free program was created to ensure our first-timers, and all of our participants, have a positive experience from the time they start training until they cross the finish line.”

The complimentary SheROX Mentor Program pairs participants with an experienced and enthusiastic female triathlete who is passionate about the sport. Mentors provide information and motivation helping women with their expectations during training and on race day.  Mentors are available via e-mail and proactively send regular tips and suggestions to address individual needs and concerns.
