Happy Blood Cancer Awareness Month!

September is blood cancer awareness month. Blood cancers are cancers of the blood, bone marrow or lymph nodes that affect normal blood cell production or function.

Today, nearly 1.3 million people in the United States are living with, or are in remission from, leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma.

Blood cancer can affect anyone, at any time. There is no way to prevent or screen for most blood cancers, so we are focused on finding cures. Visit lls.org to learn how you can help.

FDA Approves Immunotherapy for Blood Cancer Patients

Today heralds a new era in cancer treatment with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of a new, cutting-edge gene therapy that reprograms a patient’s immune system to find and kill cancer cells. This highly personalized therapy known as Kymriah (previously CTL019 or tisagenlecleucel-T) signifies the promise of CAR (chimeric antigen receptor) T-cell immunotherapy, an approach that The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) recognized early on held great promise for blood cancer patients.

In fact, LLS invested more than $20 million in research for this groundbreaking advance over the past two decades through multiple grants awarded to Carl June, M.D., and his team at the University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, who pioneered this treatment. Novartis licensed the therapy from Penn in 2016.

LLS has also invested an additional $20 million to support CAR-T advances at other institutions, including Kite Pharma’s KTE-C19 (Axi-cel), also currently under review by the FDA for patients with lymphoma. LLS partnered with Kite Pharma to support its Phase 3 clinical trial since 2015 through its Therapy Acceleration Program® (TAP).

After receiving a unanimous recommendation from a review panel in July, the FDA approved Kymriah today for the treatment of pediatric and young adults 25 years of age and younger with relapsed or refractory B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). More than 3,100 children and adolescents per year are diagnosed with ALL. The overall survival for ALL in children exceeds 85 percent, with these children undergoing between two and a half to three years of intense chemotherapy treatments. However, even patients who achieve an initial response to standard therapy will eventually relapse, and the prognosis is extremely poor for these patients. This CAR-T therapy is designed for those patients who have not responded to multiple previous treatments or are unable to remain in remission from their cancer.

“This is truly an exciting new day for cancer patients,” said Louis J. DeGennaro, Ph.D., LLS president and chief executive officer. “LLS recognized the promise of this innovative approach to treatment nearly 20 years ago. We first began to see remarkable outcomes for some of these patients in 2010 leading us to increase our funding of CAR-T therapy by supporting more than 10 major laboratories developing this method. We at LLS are extremely gratified to witness this lifesaving treatment approved so it is accessible to even more patients who desperately need new options.”

The FDA’s approval of Kymriah is based on positive data from a clinical trial showing that 83 percent of the patients treated achieved a complete response rate.

LLS is now funding the next generation of CAR-T therapy, where we anticipate the method will be useful in many different blood cancers, and perhaps even other major tumors that are difficult to treat such as brain, lung and colon cancer.

HOKA One Test Run

I just recently took my new pair of HOKA One’s out for a test spin. I saw HOKA burst onto the running and triathlon scenes a couple of years ago and my curiosity was piqued. While historically I have been somewhat a moderate to minimalist to a neutral shoe wearer, I had to check these out. It was actually my meniscus surgery earlier this year that prompted the move.

fullsizeoutput_424I’m happy to say that my first run was pretty amazing and I literally felt like I was running effortlessly downhill. If they continue to feel good this week, I will race in them in Lake Placid. And if that goes well, I’ll wear them in my fall marathons. If THEY go well, I’ll be hooked. Worth checking out HERE.

Good Day in Wildwood

wildwood run inWeather conditions were perfect as over a thousand athletes took to the beaches, roads, and boardwalk for the 14th running of the Tri the Wildwoods Triathlon produced by DelMoSports. This event had something for everyone offering a sprint and Olympic distance triathlon and aquabike, and even a 5K run and a kid’s splash and dash. I opted to race the aquabike so I could spare my knees and ankles from the risk of the soft sand beach run. Being so close to Lake Placid, I want to be safe and arrive at the start line injury free.

wildwood metalMy swim was fair given that it was an ocean swim. And although we did swim with the current, the swells were a little big for my liking. I also had some goggles issues which held me up a little but all is fair in love, war, and triathlon. Even so, I was in and out without issue and then got to enjoy one of the best bike courses in the region. The bike was fast with just enough wrinkles to keep your muscles from getting bored. All in all, it was a GOOD day! Thanks to all the staff and volunteers who worked so hard.

Tri the Wildwoods Triathlon

Up this weekend for me is the Tri the Wildwoods Triathlon in Wildwood New Jersey on Saturday. The race offers a few event options such as aquabike and triathlon in both sprint and Olympic distances As well as a 5k and a kids splash and dash race.

I opted for the Olympic aquabike for a couple of reasons. I wanted the longer open water swim in preparation for the Lake Placid 70.3 But the triathlon consists of a beach run and I did not want to risk anything funky happening to knees and ankles in that soft sand. The weather should be gorgeous.

This event is produced by DelMoSports who put on a number of top shelf quality events in the region. Check them out at www.delmosports.com. I’ll post an update next week!

Ironman Lake Placid 70.3 Bib #24

This week the athlete bib #s were published for Ironman Lake Placid 70.3. There are a couple of thousand athletes registered for this race so I was pretty surprised to see that I was assigned #24. I’m not sure if these were assigned alphabetically or if those of us representing the Ironman Foundation were assigned a low range of numbers. Regardless of how or why I received 24, the significance in this number is pretty awesome.

IMLP BibFor starters, it was one of my favorite numbers as a kid and worn by some of my athlete idols growing up like Willie Mays and Bill Bradley. In fact it was such a favorite, and I was such a fan of New York Knick Bill Bradley that I also wore #24 in high school basketball. As an adult it still holds water because my birthday is March 2nd and my wife’s is September 4th. So 2 & 4 continue to mean something.

Another key significance of #24 is the fact that February 24th, 2006 was my original leukemia diagnosis date which I talk about often. And while one would assume that an “anniversary” date such as that is a negative thing, I choose to think differently. The reality is that this disease continues to provide amazing opportunities and connect me with people and organizations that I never would have met without a diagnosis that I can call my very own.

So, on September 10th, I’ll be racing in beautiful Lake Placid New York for the 4th time feeling fortunate to be out there, fortunate to again be in remission, and fortunate to be wearing #24.

USA Triathlon Regional Council

USAT LogoSome of you may know  that I served on the USAT Mid-Atlantic Regional Council from 2006-2015. I’m happy to say that after a couple of heart to heart conversations with Council Chair and good buddy Rob Vigorito, I’ve accepted an offer to come back. There are some cool things happening here in the area  and I’m happy to lend whatever I can to to continue to grow and support a great region.
